Fossil Horse Tooth
Equus sp.
Pleistocene Age
This authentic fossil horse tooth was found in Florida, USA. Both Pleistocene and modern horses have one toe on each foot. Pleistocene representatives of Equus were the most widespread of all fossil horses. They appeared about 3 million years ago and were very abundant on both sides of the Atlantic. But by the end of the last Ice Age about 10,000 years ago, many of the fossil species of Equus had become extinct and only a few survive today. Whatever the cause, the result was extreme, particularly in America, there horses became extinct. They were subsequently reintroduction by the Spanish in the 15th Century. Thus, prehistoric Americans did not see horses.
