The teeth are a byproduct from phosphate mining process. Sharks can shed many thousands of teeth throughout their lifetime. They sink to the seafloor and are rapidly covered by sediment. Sediment acts to protect the teeth from the weathering, abrasion, and scavenging and limits exposure to oxygen and bacteria which are responsible for decay. Fossilization takes thousands of years. Shark’s teeth are preserved through a process known as permineralization. Water seeps down through the sediments and over the teeth. This water carries different minerals in it that are deposited into open pore spaces in the teeth. The most common minerals are silica and calcite, but other local minerals are deposited as well. Many species of sharks found in the oceans today have been around for 4-5 million years, however sharks are believed to have come into existence about 400 million years ago.
Caution, these teeth are sharp and adult supervision is needed for children under 4 years old.
