This fossil crab is from the late Cretaceous, Bearpaw Shale, of northern Montana.
During the late Cretaceous North America was split in two by an inland seaway that ran from the Arctic to the Gulf of Mexico. The seaway ran through central Montana, east of the ancestral Rocky Mountains, and was inhabited by a rich fauna of marine life such as this crab, Notopocorystes.
