This display contains a soil sample found in Slope County, South Dakota; from the last days of the Dinosaurs. Known as the K-Pg boundary layer. First recognized by scientists in the 1980s then confirmed worldwide, this layer contains high levels of micro meteorites and the element Iridium 77, which is extremely rare on earth but is abundant in asteroids and other space rocks. Non avian dinosaurs became extinct with the impact of a 7.5-mile-wide asteroid in the Yucatan Peninsula creating the 112-mile-wide Chicxulub crater, leading to the extinction of dinosaurs.
