Woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) is an extinct species of elephant that lived during the Pleistocene Epoch, which lasted from about 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago. The appearance and behavior of this species are among the best studied of any prehistoric animal because of the discovery of frozen carcasses in Siberia and NA. They were up to 14’ at the shoulder and weighing 6 to 8 tons. The coat consisted of an outer layer of course "guard hair", which was 12” on the upper part of the body, & 35” on the flanks & underside, & .002 mm” diameter, and a denser inner layer of shorter, curly under-wool, up 3” long & 0.05 mm diameter. The hairs on the upper leg were up to 15” long, and those of the feet were 6” long, reaching the toes. The hairs on the head were relatively short, but longer on the underside and the sides of the trunk. The tail was extended by coarse hairs up to 24” long. They likely molted seasonally, and the heaviest fur was shed during spring.
