Fossil Shark Vertebra
18-22 Million Years Old
Aurora Fossil Mines, NC
It’s true – sharks have no bones, per se. Sharks are cartilaginous fish. This means they have a skeleton made of cartilage, a lighter and more flexible substance than bone. Because of this shark fossils other than teeth are rare. However some shark "bones" calcify and become hard enoough to fossilize. This specimen is one such "bone" that became fossilized. It is from the Aurora Fossil Mines and 18-22 million years old.
