Mastodon Tooth Section
This segment of authentic fossil Mastodon tooth is at least 11,000 years old. It was found in Florida, USA. The American mastodon Mammut americanum roamed North America from at least 3.75 million to 11,000 years ago. Mastodons, along with mammoths and modern elephants, are members of the order Proboscidea. As adults they stood between 2.5 and 3 meters (8-10 feet) at the shoulder and weighed between 3500 and 5400 kilograms (4-6 tons). Their large teeth had blunt cone-like cusps with very think enamel as seen in this specimen. Mastodons probably used these teeth, as well as their tusks, to browse on herbs, shrubs, and trees. Mastodons had 12 teeth which it replaced 6 times. Teeth were up to 10 x 4.5 x 7 inches, and 10 pounds.
