WV Saber Tooth Cat Canine
Pleistocene Epoch, Irvingtonian 840,000 Years
This tooth along with a partial skull and skeleton was found in a Pendleton County, WV cave in the 1980s. This is the 2nd record of Smilodon from West Virginia. In addition to Smilodon two other large Ice Age cats were found including Jaguar, Panthera onca augusa and Cheetah, Miracinonys inexpectatus. The discovery was made by Grady, Garton et al. The original fossils were donated to the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
This is only one side of the tooth.
The upper end of the tooth has teeth marks made by a chewing rodent.
