“Duck Pot”
Hopewell Culture
You are buying a wonderful reproduction of a very rare "Duck Pot". This replica of a Hopewell ceramic vessel illustrates the high degree of technical and artistic skill achieved by these prehistoric Indians 2,000 years ago. The original pot was found in pieces in a crematory basin beneath Mound #2 at Mound City near Chillicothe, OH. The variety of decorations and the short legs on which it stands identify the vessel as Hopewellian, although the squarish shape is unique. Around the rim are vertical rows of dentate stamping produced by pressing a comb-like tool into wet clay. A row of punctates made with the tip of a wedge-shaped piece of wood or bone appears immediately beneath the stamping. On each of the four sides of the pot is a stylized duck, perhaps a shoveler, surrounded by more dentate stamping. The pot is 5" tall and 4.1/4" across.
